Chickenman

Chickenman was a satirical radio serial created by Dick Orkin in 1966. The show followed the hilarious adventures of Benton Harbor, a mild-mannered shoe salesman who transformed into the bumbling yet well-meaning crimefighter, Chickenman—“the Winged Warrior.” Originally aired on Chicago’s WCFL-AM, the short episodes quickly gained popularity and were syndicated across hundreds of stations.

With its absurd humor, campy sound effects, and Orkin’s brilliant voice work, Chickenman parodied superhero tropes while capturing the spirit of the 1960s. Benton Harbor’s crime-fighting efforts were often thwarted by his own incompetence, much to the frustration of the Commissioner and Miss Helfinger, his ever-patient secretary. Despite his flaws, Chickenman remained determined to bring justice to “Midland City.”

The show became a beloved cult classic, with reruns still entertaining oldies radio audiences today. Its catchy theme—“He’s everywhere! He’s everywhere!”—remains an iconic part of radio comedy history.
